Limoncello plays an important part of Italian culture that grew into a popular international delight.
What is Limoncello?
Limoncello is an Italian liquor made from lemons, specifically lemons that grow in Southern Italy and on the coast of Amalfi. It is a bright yellow in colour and typically 25-30% alcohol by volume.
It's typically made from the think peel of the lemon and a high proof neutral alcohol, and is relished as a digestif, traditionally sipped after a heavy meal. Limoncello is light, aromatic, and tasty making it a perfect palate cleanser, or after-dinner drink.
What type of lemons?
In Italy, Sfusato Amalfitano lemon or Femminello lemons are used. They yellow think wrinkled peel is rich in essential oils and strong aromas. They're elongated think skinned that release much oil, and strong citrus aromas and flavours.
How to Serve Limoncello?
Limoncello can be kept in the freezer of fridge so that it is ice-cold. It's served in small portions neat or on ice in a short shot glass or tall narrow glass which allows you to fully appreciate the labour and colour of your Limoncello.
What to Mix with Limoncello?
Also great in a spritz with equal parts Prosecco and Soda Water served on ice, or great as a sweet alternative with dessert.
Generally lighter than many other digestives, a delicious Limoncello has a balanced mix of tartness and sweetness. It's delicious on a hot summer's day!
